چکیده

Temporal intensity flicker is a common artifact in old film sequences. Removing disturbing temporal fluctuations in image intensities is desirable because it increases both the subjective quality and, where image sequences are stored in a compressed format, the coding efficiency. We describe a robust technique that corrects intensity flicker automatically by equalizing local frame means and variances in the temporal sense. The low complexity of our method makes it suitable for hardware implementation. We tested the proposed method on sequences with artificially added intensity flicker and on original film material. The results show a great improvement.

Flicker Parameters Estimation in Old Film Sequences Containing Moving Objects

The aim of this study is to improve the accuracy of flicker parameters estimation in old film sequences in which moving objects are present. Conventional methods tend to fail in flicker parameters estimation due to the effects of moving objects. Our proposed method firstly utilizes an adaptive Gaussian mixture model (GMM)-based method to detect the moving objects in the film sequences, and comb...

Restoration of Old Film Sequences

Image flicker, undesirable fluctuations in image intensity not originating from the original scene, is a common artifact in old film sequences. After describing possible causes for image flicker this paper models the effects of flicker as local phenomena. Unfortunately estimation of the model parameters from the degraded sequence is hampered due to presence of noise, dirt and motion. In the lat...

Spatially Adaptive Flicker Compensation for Archived Film Sequences Using a Nonlinear Model

We present an algorithm suitable for the compensation of flicker in archived film sequences. The proposed method is a substantial improvement over our previous work which adopted a nonlinear approach to flicker compensation motivated by fundamental principles of photographic image registration. The improvements include reliability weighting, spatial adaptation and motion compensated weighting. ...

Stabilization of Flicker-Like Effects in Image Sequences through Local Contrast Correction

In this paper, we address the problem of the restoration of image sequences which have been affected by local intensity modifications (local contrast changes). Such artifacts can be encountered in particular in biological or archive film sequences, and are usually due to inconsistent exposures or sparse time sampling. In order to reduce such local artifacts, we introduce a local stabilization o...

Non-linear flicker compensation for archived film sequences using motion-compensated greylevel tracing

We present a novel approach for the compensation of temporal brightness variations (commonly referred to as flicker) in archived film sequences. The proposed method 1is motivated by fundamental principles of photographic image registration and provides a substantial level of adaptation to temporal but also spatial variations of picture brightness. Additionally our scheme provides an efficient m...
